Ducon Concrete Limited, based at Kanturk in County Cork, has purchased the first Doosan DL450-5 Stage IV compliant wheel loader in the Republic of Ireland. The new machine was supplied by Adare Machinery, an Authorised Dealer for the Doosan Heavy and Bobcat ranges in Ireland.
The new DL450-5 wheel loader is working at Ducon’s Ballyhest Limestone Quarry near Castlecor in Mallow, where it is loading and stockpiling products from the quarry’s mobile crushing and screening system. With a heaped bucket capacity of 4.5 m3, the Doosan DL450-5 wheel loader is intended to meet a wide range of material-handling needs from loading and transporting recycled material to industrial, mining and quarrying applications.
The output at Ballyhest Quarry is split between supplying the limestone aggregate used in the readymix concrete and concrete block production at the main Ducon manufacturing plant at Ballymaquirk near Kanturk and producing various grades and sizes of aggregate for road making and other applications for sale to external customers.
As there were none of the new Doosan Stage IV compliant machines in the Republic of Ireland, John Murphy, Quarry/Plant Manager at the Ballyhest Quarry, visited Alpha Quarry Products in Northern Ireland to see one of the new machines in action. After hearing from the operator and plant manager at Alpha, Ducon decided it was the correct machine for their requirements of Ballyhest Quarry.
The DL450-5 is powered by the Scania DC13 6-cylinder engine producing 257 kW (354 HP) of power at 1800 rpm. Providing generous torque at low rpm, up to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption and excellent response, the Scania DC13 engine meets Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalyst reduction after-treatment technologies.
John Murphy said: “You expect teething problems with new machines, but we have 200 hours now on the new DL450-5 and we haven’t had any at all. This echoes the comments of the operator at Alpha who told us the DL450-5 was the best wheel loader he had ever operated. We liked the absence of a DPF and with AdBlue we can control operating costs. Costs for running plant can get out of control fairly quickly so another factor for us was the excellent fuel consumption – at just 15-16 l/hour, the DL450-5 burns a lot less fuel than many of the other machines on the market.”
Like all Doosan large Stage IV wheel loaders, the fuel efficient Scania engine is combined in the DL450-5 with ZF 5-speed transmissions, and many other features to minimise fuel consumption such as Auto Idle, Torque Convertor Lock-up 2nd-5th gear, an electronically controlled fan, low rolling resistance axles and load sensing hydraulics, to mention a few.
Enabling 100 percent torque delivery without any loss from 2nd to the top 5th gear, Torque Convertor Lock-up gives faster acceleration on flat ground (10%) and higher climbing ability (up to 20%), providing up to 15% fuel savings in daily operation. This contrasts with many of the drive systems on other machines, where the lock-up is engaged only in highest gear.
John Murphy confirmed this: “The DL450-5 is very powerful and responsive and even going up a steep climb with a full load on the front end it has plenty of power to push on. The controls are well spaced out but within easy reach. The view from the cab is very good and with the Doosan rear camera and a fairly large monitor inside the cab the view from all points is excellent.”
The ZF Type II axle with an automatic Hydraulic Differential Lock (HDL) provides further protection of the drive system components, including tyre wear reduction and produces 100% tractive effort when necessary, contributing to further fuel savings.
John Murphy said: “There is no heat produced inside the axle and tyre wear is reduced and fuel is saved when you drive, even on corners, with reduced resistance. The HDL axle is just one of a host of features included as standard on the DL450-5, which are options on other machines, such as the ride control bucket suspension system, an SKF Vogel auto lubrication system, a three-stage air filter system with turbo three cyclone separator, a third spool additional hydraulic line and a Grammer Actimo XXL double air suspension seat.”
