A Scottish first…

Aberdeen-based David Smith Contractors Ltd has purchased a new Doosan DX530LC-3 52 tonne crawler excavator from Balgownie Ltd, based at Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, the local Authorised Doosan and Bobcat dealer.

The Stage IIIB compliant DX530LC-3 model is the largest excavator that David Smith Contractors has ever bought and the first from the Doosan range. Immediately upon its arrival, the excavator was set to work in the company’s new quarry near Inverurie. David Smith Contractors acquired the Smiddyburn Quarry five months ago and the DX530LC-3 excavator is used to extract rock from the face and load it into crushing and screening equipment, to produce material for use in the company’s civil engineering projects across Aberdeenshire.

David Smith, Managing Director of David Smith Contractors, said: “Balgownie was able to offer us a very attractive package that provides us with a bigger machine with the muscle needed to work efficiently in the quarry. The productivity of the new Doosan excavator ensures we have a good supply of aggregate for our own projects, providing us with further cost-savings by allowing us to keep these substantial costs in-house.”

As standard, reinforcing plates have been added on the boom end in the DX530LC-3 excavator as part of a design that ensures heavy duty robustness throughout. The shape of the boom end has also been modified and the material for the boom main boss has been changed to cast steel to improve durability. Reinforcement plates on the inner boom and arm have been repositioned to improve structural strength.

The Doosan DX530LC-3 excavator offers the strength and reliability needed for heavy duty work such as large-scale earthmoving, moving rock, pulling down buildings, secondary breaking, loading haulers and pipeline projects found on quarrying and mining, highway, aggregate, demolition, utility and general construction projects.

David Smith added: “With its wide undercarriage, the DX530LC-3 model produces exceptional stability and unmatched lifting capabilities. This is a mass excavation machine fitted with an extra heavy counterweight and a short front end to deliver more breakout force and tackle every tough digging job, so it will also be a very powerful tool for use on our own civils projects.”

Complementing the operations in its own quarry, David Smith Contractors offers a complete crushing and screening service in Scotland and all over the UK. This is particularly useful on civil engineering projects which are geographically remote from quarries, where material purchase and haulage can be a significant project cost. The deployment of crusher and screen combinations from David Smith Contractors provides a viable alternative to hauling aggregate by road from distant quarries.

As well as the crushing and screening service and plant hire, David Smith Contractors provides a complete range of civil engineering services including bulk earthworks and GPS remodelling, demolition, drainage, retail construction, decommissioning, petrochemical maintenance, road construction and piling.
